Overview
We’ve introduced a more detailed and flexible way to describe freight vehicles in your shipment data. Instead of using a single VEHICLE code, such as P23:AB, you can now provide five dedicated attributes: VEHICLE_TYPE, VEHICLE_CATEGORY, VEHICLE_MAX_SIZE, VEHICLE_BODY_TYPE, and VEHICLE_OPERATION_TYPE. This enables more accurate emissions calculations and supports future enhancements to emissions factors.
If you previously used a single VEHICLE column, you can now map those codes to five granular attributes: VEHICLE_TYPE, VEHICLE_CATEGORY, VEHICLE_MAX_SIZE, VEHICLE_BODY_TYPE, and VEHICLE_OPERATION_TYPE. Find your legacy code in the table below and copy the corresponding values to the new fields.

No. Each legacy code maps to exactly one combination of new attributes.
Can I use null values for the new columns?
Can I use null values for the new columns?
Yes. Only VEHICLE_TYPE is mandatory across all modes of transport. Other fields can be null if they don't apply to your VEHICLE_TYPE. See the Multimodal freight file specification for which fields are required per category.

Legacy VEHICLE codes will continue to be supported indefinitely. However, the new vehicle attributes enable more accurate emissions calculations and will benefit from future enhancements to emissions factors.
